Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Security Therapy Aide 2 for the Alton Mental Health Center located in Alton, Illinois to serves as lead worker for the day shift over staff providing therapeutic care to patients in a secure residential care housing facility forensic unit. Coordinates the movements, conduct, activities and basic care of patients under jurisdiction. Provides sub professional counseling. Prepares routine reports concerning patient behavior and process and response to treatment of medications.


Job Responsibilities

  • As a member of a team, participates in overall patient care and treatment.
  • Serves as designated lead worker on an assigned shift.
  • Conducts formal, classroom training for trainees and other new facility staff.
  • Arbitrates disputes or differences between patients.
  • Provides security during distribution of prescribed medications.
  • Provides direct services in living skills training and simple recreational programs.
  • Updates roster of patients for specific areas.
  • Directly oversees patient hygiene and safety to ensure that the personal care needs of the patients are met.
  • Conducts routing checks of security equipment and interior of the buildings to ensure the integrity of the security systems, locks, screens, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Requires two years experience as a Security Therapy Aide, including successful completion of an approved Security Therapy Aide Training Program or equivalent experience.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to physically restrain patients to prevent injury to the patient or others.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Requires freedom from personality or character defects which would interfere with effective treatment of patients with mental illness.
  • Requires the ability to think clearly and exercise initiative in emergency situations.
  • Requires ability to defend self and to assist in the instruction of fellow employees in protective measures.
  • Requires ability to pass Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training.
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry and assists patients with ambulation.
  • Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Work Hours: 6:30am - 3:00pm; Group E (off Tuesday & Friday and every other weekend)
